Some work environments need jackets. Most often, these are work environments outdoors, such as for construction and road working jobs. Climates change, however, and working outdoors in the summer months gives way to cooler fall temperatures and eventually winter. As outdoor workers need to be protected in all conditions in order to work efficiently, owning a work jacket is necessary. But, unlike standard pieces of safety equipment like gloves, work jackets generally have no regulation, and it's up to you to find out what works best for you and your working environment.
A lighter work jacket is appropriate for cooler months. Whether you choose a jacket from well-known brands like Carhartt or Dickies or not, a lighter jacket is generally a denim or fleece design with no insulation. Rain jackets are necessary for some work environments and, without any insulation, these, too, fall under the category of lighter work jackets. Lighter work jackets can be altered to be water resistant or even insulated. For the former, this includes chemically altering the material to be water repellant, while the later simply involves including a zip-out flannel lining.
Outdoor workers need more protection in the winter. Some work jackets are made with thicker materials, and this includes duck jackets by Carhartt. Duck is similar to canvas, and a basic duck jacket keeps the wearer warm and won't tear after many uses. Ordinary work jackets, as mentioned previously, also are made insulated, and this can include adding a lighter lining to quilting. Jacketed designed for working outdoors in extremely cold temperatures are usually given the name "arctic" because of the combination of insulation and thicker materials.
What about when you work around extreme heat? Although this usually only applies to welders, flame resistant jackets are on the market. Anyone who works near flames regularly needs this type of jacket. A flame resistant coat doesn't look significantly different from an ordinary work jacket, however, as the material has been treated with fire retardant chemicals.
